Coconut chutney (nariyal chutney)
It is the traditional south indian recipe which is mostly consumed by idli-dosa , sambar and uttapam. It is the most famous recipe among all chutney recipes. Coconut chutney can be made in many ways but mine is the simplest and tastiest chutney. Some makes it by adding roasted grams (chana dal) or by adding peanuts into it.

To give it a more better taste one can add a little curd into it. The key ingredient of this recipe is ofcourse coconut. If you can't find fresh coconut you can make it with desiccated coconut also. Just use a little warm water during grinding if you are using desiccated coconut.

Quick coconut chutney recipe :
- To make coconut chutney , first of all remove the brown parts of coconut from it and then wash it properly. Skip this process if using desiccated coconut.
- Put the coconut into a mixer grinder and add 1 green chilly , 1 tbsp curd (yogurt;dahi) , 1 handful roasted peanuts , roasted grams (bhuna chana dal) and salt to taste. I have used grounded roasted grams. You can also use it or simply add roasted grams into the grinder.
- If you dont have roasted grams or roasted peanuts , you can roast it in a pan for 5 minutes on medium flame. You can roast it either in oil or without oil.
- Adding roasted gram helps in making a smooth chutney and gives a better taste to the chutney. You should must add it.
- Now after putting all the ingredients in the mixer , add a little water (over 1 tbsp) and grind it to a fine paste. If you're using dessicated coconut , add warm water.
- Take it out into a bowl and adjust the consistency according to your choice by adding some water.
For tempering :
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in a tempering pan.
- In this , add 2 dry red chillies , 2 tso mustard seeds , 6-8 curry leaves and let the mustard seeds crackle.
- Then pour this tempering over the chutney which we had grounded.
- And done. Coconut chutney is ready. Serve it with rava idli or idli-sambhar or idli-dosa and so on.
Notes :
- If you're using desiccated coconut (coconut powder) , add little warm water when you grind it. Other ingredient will remain the same.
- I have used both roasted gram flour and peanuts , but you can use only one of them. You can use only roasted gram also instaed of roasted gram flour.
- I have added curd into it , but this is totally based on your choice. You can skip this.
- Do not overcook or burn the tempering otherwise it will ruin you chutney. Prepare a new tempering in case if it gets burn.
- You can grind it with your favourite leaves such as mint or coriander to give it some colour and taste. Some calls it green coconut chutney as well.
- You should must add curry leaves in the tempering if you have. I have not added due to lockdown.
